ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Good news for cancer patients in Hancock and Washington Counties. Maine Coast Memorial Hospital officials announced a 2.1 million dollar expansion project at the Mary Dow Center for Cancer.
The expansion will allow the facility to treat more downeast cancer patients closer to their homes. President and C.E.O. of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Charlie Therrien says they have been planning this project for the past 6 months.
Therrien said, "Unfortunately due to the demand and incident rates of cancer rates in Maine and nationally the demand has gone up so we felt it was appropriate to try and increase the level of service and the facility to try to enhance our care to our patients."
The Mary Dow Center was named after a nurse who worked at the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth but had to travel to Bangor for her breast cancer treatments before the center was started. Mary dow died in 1993.
