AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The traditional firearms season on deer opened today. 170,000 sportsmen and women are expected to take to the field before the season ends on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
All Maine hunters may shoot bucks. To shoot does, a hunter must have an any-deer Permit. This year, The Department of Insland Fisheries and Wildlife issued 48,825 any-deer permits. However, the deer herd has been decimated in Northern and Downeast Maine. Sporting camps in these backwoods areas say they miss the hayday of Maine deer hunting when sportmen used to fill their camps.
