PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland Sea Dogs' opening day starter Alex Wilson is trying to become the first Saudi Arabian born starting pitcher to make his way to the big leagues.

Wilson, who was promoted to Portland last season, says he needs to become more consistent to make it to the majors.

"I think I have the stuff to do it," said Wilson.  "Last year I was a little up and down, like a little rollercoaster ride, but I definitely defined my pitches and got a lot more comfortable in situations that I hadn't been before."

Wilson's father played football for the Cincinnati Bengals before working around the world as a geologist, but football was not the sport for him.

"I never fell in love with football the way I did with baseball and it has been my passion since I was like three years old," he explained.  "I mean, my mom and dad tell stories about how I was in the backyard hitting Whiffle Balls when I was two and stuff like that, it was just one of those things that stuck with me from when I was a toddler to now and I still love it."
