BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Officials say one person is dead after being struck by the Amtrak Downeaster in Biddeford.

The accident happened around 3:00pm near the Main Street crossing. According to the Amtrak website, the southbound train, Amtrak 686, normally leaves Portland at 2:35.

Officials with the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority tell NEWS CENTER 55 passengers are on-board the Downeaster.

Pan Am Railways owns the property where the accident occurred -- about 100 yards west of Main Street. Amtrak, Pan Am and Biddeford Police are all at the scene.

Amtrak officials expect significant delays for the returning train which is scheduled to leave Boston's North Station at 5:40pm.

NNEPRA says it expects a crowded northbound train because of the Patriots' Day Holiday, an early Red Sox game and the Boston Marathon.
