School sports are one way for children to lead an active and healthy lifestyle, but are your kids getting the most out of their team practices? On this Fit at Five we take a look at a new facility that is able to fill in that void by focusing on strength and conditioning.
Doug Spurling, owner of Spurling Training Systems, tells us that he wanted to give back to the town of Kennebunk.
"Up until now the kids haven't had a place that is designated as a sports and fitness center."
Spurling Training Systems opened at the beginning of the year, and has been treated like an after school program for kids. The kids get right off the bus at Spurling. Their workouts focus on strength and conditioning. Something that is sometimes lost in their team practices.
Everyone coming to workout at this facility has their own custom made program to follow. Kids and adults all go through a screening process with their first visit. Their monthly screenings help to reflect their progress, and let the trainers know which parts of the program to tweak.
When we visited Spurling for this shoot the thing that stood out the most to me is how much these kids love working out. There were several trainers helping the kids with their form to make sure they would stay injury free. Each kid walked around with a clip board and made notes on each exercise. They were doing many things that I would have never dreamed of doing when I was that age. The best part...they were having fun!
