b. The Muppet Movie
Bergen was born Feb. 16, 1903. His career as the voice of dummy Charlie McCarthy spanned 50 years on stage, screen and radio.
While he was still struggling to make a name for himself, Bergen's talent was recognized early on by Westbrook native, Rudy Vallee. His guest appearances on Vallee's radio show helped Bergen build his national audience and prove that he could sustain a show of his own.
Bergen died before his final performance on "The Muppet Movie" was released in theaters in 1979. There is a message in the closing credits dedicating the movie to his memory.
